Six killed, 53 injured

A horror bomb blast has torn through a crowded avenue in Istanbul popular with tourists and locals, as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemns the 'treacherous attack'.

Harrowing footage shows bodies strewn in the street after a huge blast tore through the shopping district of Istiklal Avenue.

In one video, an overturned pram could be seen on the pavement with children appearing to be among those injured.

Speaking before his departure to the G-20 summit in Indonesia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called the explosion a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished.

Erdogan did not say who was behind the attack, but that a woman was thought to have been involved.

He said it had the "smell of terror" without offering details and also adding that was not absolutely certain yet.

Investigations were ongoing by the police and the governor's office, including reviewing footage of the area, he added.

Footage showed a woman dropping a bag on a bench before the explosion, according to local media reports.

A horrifying video shows flames erupting and a loud bang heard as pedestrians ran away.

İstiklal Caddesi is a crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals, lined by shops and restaurants that tourists often visit but also where thousands of Turks go to work, eat, get a coffee, pray and meet people.

Erdogan, in connection with the explosion in Istanbul, said the following:
"It smells of terror here, there is preliminary evidence that a woman played a role in this."
Information appeared in the media that a woman left a bag, which exploded.
In the meantime, according to the Cumhuriyet newspaper, shooting is heard near the Shishkhane metro station near the same Istiklal Avenue.
The authorities imposed a ban on coverage of the terrorist attack and limited access to social networks in the country.

Na, I think it's where the white arrow is. You can see him deliberately wiggle the cursor over that spot before the blast.
