At Least 15 Killed In Greek Orthodox Church Suicide Bomb Attack in Syria

Syria. A suicide bombing targeted the Mar Elias (Saint Elias) Greek Orthodox Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, Syria, during Sunday mass today.

The attack, the first of its kind in Damascus since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, was carried out by a member of the Islamic State (ISIS), according to Syria’s Interior Ministry.

The bomber entered the church, opened fire on worshippers, and then detonated an explosive vest, causing significant destruction, including shattered pews, bloodied floors, and damaged walls.

Also outside two car exploded and started burning so Police thinks they're part of the attack.

Security sources reported at least 15 deaths and 22 injuries.

Local media and eyewitnesses cited by Al Mayadeen and Pravda reported over 20 deaths.

The attack has raised concerns about sectarian violence and the presence of ISIS sleeper cells in Syria, especially under the current Islamist-led government of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who is struggling to stabilize the country and gain the trust of religious minorities.

The White Helmets documented the church’s ruins, and security forces cordoned off the area, though concerns were raised about potential interference by HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) forces at the crime scene. No group other than ISIS has claimed responsibility.
