I was at that race as well. I was sitting along The Lakeshore just east of that tree. Saw the smoke but didn't catch the actual wreck though.

Besides Jeff krosnoff, volunteer track worker Gary Avrin was killed, not a spectator.
Jeff Krosnoff was essentially killed instantly when his helmeted head was slammed into a tree adjacent to, but outside of, the catch fencing.
Krosnoff's father, mother, and wife were attending their first Indy Car race.
