2/3 of Israelis self-identify as nonreligious or atheist, you can hold whatever religious beliefs you choose, and leaders are chosen in open elections. For all the faults of the current Israeli state, it is not a theocracy. If you do not believe me, I encourage you to check out Tel Aviv's thriving gay scene - Shpagat and Lima are two bars that seem to be quite popular. The fact is, like it or not, Israel is the best thing the Levant has going for it. They have very high scientific and tech output - biotech, genetics, agriculture and water reclamation, the invention of flash drives and dual-core processors, etc. - the workforce is one of the most highly-educated in the world and living standards are very high. I agree it would be better if they murdered fewer people. When you're the vastly more powerful side in a conflict, you have a responsibility to take the ethical high ground. But they don't listen to me. |
