That aerial work platform is called a swing stage and its notorious for taking lives in the construction industry. I have a ticket to operate one, but I’ll never work on one. This is an example of some of the reasons why. |

Re: Iraq: Workers Fall From Scaffolding During Sand Storm
The structural point that they were sitting on and holding onto, was that where the scaffolding broke apart. Had they been sitting nearer to the middle, the components they were on would not have broken apart beneath them. Not only this, but had they been sitting nearer to the middle, they would have experienced far less centrifugal force throwing them around, because the centrifugal force was strongest towards the outsides of the scaffolding. Besides this, this is one of the most profoundly unique videos I have ever seen, on here or anywhere. Erbil has oil money for these skyscrapers, however I have no idea about the scaffolding regulations or the speed at which sandstorms can erupt upon the city like this. The father should have shielded his children from having to bear this entire ordeal, as well. The emotions of the family are deeply troubling, yet so profoundly human that they show us a side of humanness rarely seen on this site. We rarely grasp, with the sometimes witty, often degenerate puns that we see in the comments, how profoundly impactful such events are to families of the deceased as well as witnesses. |

Poor fucks. They were worst positioned. The center would experience less force. But who knows. In the heat of the moment you don't think logically. I do feel if they wrapped their arms in a manner where they can lock their elbow making a 90 degree turn with the elbow and arm onto a part of it they could've had a better chance. Perhaps they under estimated the forces. |

"Would you like to wear a safety harness?" "Nah. I'm good" You'd still get slammed against the building I suppose, but I'd take my chances with that than a straight plummet to the ground. Sandstorms are common and expected in those regions. Are there no contingencies plans for these situations? |
