This was a split rim wheel that exploded, not the tire. Split rims are called “Widowmakers” for this exact reason. Like another user said, tires on split rims are inflated in a cage to avoid this scenario but the cages have failed and still killed people. |

Me, too. Many, many, many years ago, I worked in similar environment. We used a cage and never had a blow out...even when we tried to over inflate just to see what would happen. Still to this very day, doesn't matter if it's a bike tire or truck tire, I wait for that boom.

Anytime I'm inflating a tire I have this fear. A friend of mine worked for the fire department and responded to a guy filling a wheelbarrow tire that blew up and he broke both his wrists. Imagine having two broken wrists? You have to find someone to wipe your ass for 6 weeks. fuck that! I think I'd rather get killed like these dudes did. |
