No, jumping in to help would have been a death sentence, and they knew it. They've likely seen this before. The drowner was even a little too far out to offer him an end of that deep water stick.

Strange thing with drownings, it never looks like the person is drowning. Hence the reason so many people drown.

I don't think I would swim in any major river in India considering that one way they have of burying a body is to put it on a raft and let it float downstream until they rot and eventually drift ashore for the starving feral dogs to rip apart and start feasting on. Will never forget that horrifying video by an american tourist taken from a boat of dogs eating the headless torso of a child on shore. I'd be afraid that if I swam in that no doubt filthy beyond human comprehension river and dove under for a minute that I'd come back up with a kid's hand or a foot in my mouth... or worse  |

I will never understand these idiots who can't swim going anywhere near a body of water. If I knew water could kill me that easily, it would be the absolute last place on the planet I'd go near, let alone film myself in the water. Or they could at least try to learn to swim. I guess you really can't fix stupid.
