Re: Flechettes Are Nasty Little Fuckers!
Flechettes have very limited applications. They have a 'cool' factor, but are not very effective outside of a very few circumstances. Despite their 'arrow' design, they are not aerodynamically stable for most of their flight. They don't have much mass and velocity drops off drastically within a very short range. They have an 'instinctively' (?) intriguing design with which arms developers have experimented for decades. Still, flechettes are almost never found in use on the battlefield. |

Re: Flechettes Are Nasty Little Fuckers!
Yeah. That's just emotional manipulation for political aims. The fact is that flechettes are just not an optimum design and do not do an efficient job at killing people. Land mines go in and out of the news as a low level cause celebre from time to time, but they are still used all over the world. Why? Because they work and work really really well. ************************************ The photo of the bomblets was interesting. They did some field testing of dropping huge enormous incalculable amounts of small little solid steel bomblets (from B-52's I think) in Vietnam. They were definitely lethal, but were determined to be not an efficient enough way to kill sufficient numbers of people and so were dropped (pun intended) from further consideration. |

Re: Flechettes Are Nasty Little Fuckers!
I agree, but they are still used in artillery shells. They are for directive munitions concentrated on a specific target and to minimize collateral damage. Aka "Beehives" still in use. Landmines are fucking embarrassing.... They don't identify friend or foe, child or adult, women or animals... Yet we plant them on FOREIGN soil! Sad isn't it? <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pXVCYQ1qix8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
