If it were a simple fist fight, the victim would have definitely won! Way better foot work, keeping proper distance, etc.

Obviously, it's easy for me to say not being involved, but he might've been better served trying to retreat. That being said, when something like that happens, a split second is all it takes to turn the tables and he could've still wound up dead.
