The procedure was (and still is somewhere) to provide one randomly selected shooter of the firing squad a blank cartridge, on the theory that each of the shooters may take comfort in the fact that they may not have fired a live round.

I thought it was because whoever's bullet actually killed the person was not known by anyone. They used several shooters and none of them knew for sure who killed the victim. I doubt the victim cared who's bullet killed him, but it might be a bit harder (or even make you feel pissed off) if you thought your bullet had missed the target. This way, no one knows who's bullet was whose!

I don't see why they just don't make sure that everyone has bullets and hits the target, no questions asked.. I mean for fucks sake, everyone in the firing squad knows what their purpose and intentions are when they are selected for that detail. If mother fuckers cant kill as ordered by their superiors, they have no business being in the military. Im sure that those soldiers in that firing squad detail had no problems with shooting enemies to the allied forces. Im sure they had lots of homies that got whacked while taking over Europe..
