You may be correct, of course, but I would tend to think that shock and brain damage would ameliorate the pain for the very short time until 'lights out'. I'm not so sure that he suffered any pain.  |

Medical staff can deduce the level of brain dead in a person based on how their eyes track. So if someone is asleep or in a drug induced coma, and you move their head around their eyes will move to keep "looking" in the same direction. If their eyes don't adjust themselves like that they have a very slim chance of recovering. So there was still quite a bit of brain activity going on there at the end before he completely expired
