Entire Family Run Over by Truck, Father carries Brains Exposed Child in the Street

Jan 13 2011, Ghana, Four pupils of the Agyiba International School and one woman were killed when an articulated truck ran over them at a zebra crossing at Kwesimintsim.

The driver of the truck, with registration number AS 1140 N and the inscription “Forever Young” at the back, bolted after escaping unhurt.

According to the traffic warden on duty at the time of the accident, Mr Mawuli Ahiakpo, about 3:30 p.m. the children got to the zebra crossing and signalled him to help them cross the road.

He said there was no traffic from the Kwesimintsim end of the road towards Takoradi and so after he had stopped a Honda Accord car, with registration number VR 1749-09, moving from the Takoradi end to stop, he signalled the children and the woman to cross.

According to the traffic warden, all of a sudden the articulated truck moving at top speed appeared from the Takoradi end.

It was unable to control the speed and ran over the children and the woman who had almost finished crossing the road, killing some of them on the spot.

The truck, he said, climbed the pavement and landed on the other side of the road, while the Honda saloon car also rolled to the side of the road.

Mr Ahiakpo said the truck rammed into the rear of the saloon car and landed on the children on the ground.

He said at the time of the accident, seven children and a woman were crossing the road.

Pius Donkoh, 7 and Awurukua Smith, 11, both of Agyiba International School in Takoradi

and Perpetual Christian Oppong, in her early 50s, were also crushed to death in the accident by an articulated truck with registration number AS 1140 N.

and two of her siblings, Pius Donkoh and Ann-Marie Donkoh, all pupils of the same school, were hit by the articulated truck at a zebra crossing on the Kwesimintsim-Takoradi highway.

Pius and Ewurakua Smith, who were also hit by the vehicle, died on the spot, while Ann-Marie and Melisah sustained injuries.

The injured persons were initially sent to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital for treatment.

Ann-Marie was treated and discharged but, Melisah, whose condition was critical, was flown to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra where she died.

Mohammed Abass, 31, who was driving the articulated truck that allegedly hit and killed the school kids and the elderly woman, was put before court on Monday January 17, 2011 on provisional charges of careless and inconsiderate driving, as well as negligently causing harm.

His plea was not taken and his prosecutor, Albert Deletsa, pleaded with the court to remand the accused in police custody to assist in investigations.

The court, presided over by Charles Nimako, therefore remanded the accused to re-appear in court on February 2, 2011.
