I think the color (brighter or darker) depends on which blood vessel you sever. One (no idea which one anymore) takes bright red blood full of oxygen from lungs while the other takes dark red blood (no oxygen in it) back.

Yeah i noticed it but i think it could actually be smoke from the gunshot wounds. This was point blank so some burning gunpowder would be in the wounds. And he was shot like 3 times in the head.
