I'm curious to know what the poison was that could have such a lethal effect.. At first I thought radioactive metals such as polonium, but these need to be ingested to cause rapid and almost-guaranteed death. So my suspicion is that the letter has been treated in a nuclear reactor, bombarded with neutrons, to render it intensely radioactive. This would be undetectable without radiological metering equipment, and it will emit gamma radiation which will kill people at a distance, unlike alpha radiation from natural sources like polonium or americium.
