United Kingdom, Essex 2005. Daniel Pollen and Andrew Griffiths are punched and stabbed in an unprovoked violent attack. 17 year old student Daniel Pollen died after being stabbed in the heart.
Teaching points: Not all attacks are preceded by warning signs of aggression. Not all attacks are due to conflict. The hands up position that Daniel took is a good initial defense strategy but must be followed by close quarters combat strategies, especially if the attacker has already made physical combat. The video also shows the importance of CCTV. The attackers were found easily and quickly. The 17 year old who stabbed Daniel is serving life and the other two accomplices (25 and 19) were sentenced for 5 years.
