Police are not trained to injure. They are trained to kill, and kill only. Until a time comes where it is necessary, there isn't much you or I could say about what it's like to have to defend your life. Maybe then we will understand.

No if you listened to the vid the guy was still fighting. It depends on the caliber of the weapon and if he had hallow points. If he did this with a .40 a .45 or a .357 sig I would wonder. If it was just a 9mm without hallow points I can understand. Anyway if he was hoped up on drugs it dosent matter. Unless it was a head or heart shot it wouldnt have even phased him.

The barb obviously didn't get embedded into his skin - a quick axe swing can end your life in a second. These cops only had a split second to think and I think they did what they needed to do to protect themselves. Look at the vid of the guy with the knife in Guatemala or something where he offs a few cops with a knife because they hesitate to use their weapons.
