At least he tried to escape. He was in the Afghan military before the taliban took control and were looking for him.

Good for him; he went down fighting. Of course, he was also VERY lucky that these guys were already trigger happy. I'm sure as soon as they'd blown out his brains, they were like, "goddamnit, we should have made an example of him " ie torture. If people are willing to blow your head off just because, can you IMAGINE what they could do to you if you REALLY pissed them off  ?
