The shooting was not justified, but its pretty dumb to be going out and creating trouble with random strangers in a country where so many people carry guns. Especially approaching a car, starting an argument, opening a door - the occupants would rightly feel threatened.

I'm not a fan of guns but in that situation I'd have no issue with someone who presented a firearm in response to that threat. But when the threat runs away you can no longer justify shooting.

Very interesting question is why someone was sitting in the car with a firearm, esp a long gun, in the first place. Looking for trouble, seeking out takovers?

Another question - has this been covered in news yet? (I saw earlier comments in this thread about not being able to find any). If not, I would start to wonder if this was a set-up for social media - guy in car with gun loaded with blanks, etc.

One of our "in my day" favorites for the mean bastard neigbor was to get a couple cans of Drano and write FUCK YOU on his lawn. As soon as it rained, the Drano came to life and burned the grass to the root. One idiot guy in the neighborhood tried to fix it on the cheap and just put down grass seed. New grass is lighter in color than the established lawn so for a while he had FUCK YOU in a nicely contrasting shade of green.
