Re: Budd Dwyer, Commits Suicide During News Conference: Hi-Quality
I watched this in my senior-level ethics class in college. The teacher was Steve Bell, well-known to America during the Vietnam War and later on Good Morning America. The first time I ever saw death "live" was Dale Earnhardt's 2001 Daytona crash. When the annoucement came that he died, I realized that I had watched a man die instantly, but it wasn't as profound as seeing this video three years later. Steve Bell showed us many video montages of his footage from ABC news and documentaries, and now I understand the dilemmas faced by the media when covering death. It's all about getting the right mix of telling the story, preserving privacy if warranted, and a little bit of basic human dignity. One thing I did want to clarify is that Dwyer was a state senator and representative, but at the time of his death was the state treasurer. He committed suicide because of a scandal involving overpaid taxes and kickbacks. |
