Re: Biker, Cut in Half, but Still Alive Asks for His Organs to Be Donated
I did go to the side of a fatally injured man in London. He'd been run over by a double decker bus. I didn't see it happen. But I heard the ungodly wails, and heard what I would later realise was his bones crunching under the weight of the bus. I was the first to go to him to check for signs of life. Name on his bus pass. Answer questions of the emergency services. All the while we were being filmed. And onlookers telling me not to waste my time because it was too late and there was nothing that could be done. He was unconscious and non responsive. I touched his fingers briefly. Since then I've wished I'd held his hand more, and kept on speaking about anything and everything. Just in case. If he'd been conscious and speaking, I might have asked if he had any messages for loved ones. Soppy movie type stuff like that. If I'd known the coppers that turned up weren't going to wait for the ambulance but instead pick him up by all fours, including his absolutely crushed lower half and legs, I might have turned him on his back and attempted CPR. It's surreal. Sitting at a bus stop late at night with my Elderly mother. Then sprinting towards the carnage, ignoring her protests. "I can't not go!" Thinking it would be clear the casualty was a gonner then I'd go straight back. Then realising there was a weak rythmic movement like pulsing in the exposed leg flesh and muscle. So, duty bound to remain there until the police turned up, then I moved away, back to my cross but proud looking Mum who couldn't wait for my first hand account. I've done similar before, in Nigeria. That one literally gave the death rattle as me and another volunteer with a car raced from one hospital to the next to find who would accept him. This was man and son on motorcycle versus articulated lorry. Again, unconscious. Until he croaked. His head was across my lap as I was asked to sit in the backseat with him. It went from dusk to night and I will always remember the street lamps casting an intermittent glow across this strangers face cheek down on my lap. Then came the expulsion of air that I mistook for a strained burp. And prayed he wasn't about to puke all over me. I can handle blood and a bit of guts. But not puke. His young son looked like he'd live though. |

Re: Biker, Cut in Half, but Still Alive Asks for His Organs to Be Donated
I guess it's hard to empathize when you yourself may be in a state of shock. Water guy was nice, but the dying man figured it would be a waste of clean water. It's a tough call, would I want a stranger holding me hand? Would I be annoyed by people thinking they could help? Or would I really want to be alone e in my thoughts, full of regret and searching my life for the wrongs I'd done to invite this fate? Yeah, I think I'd like someone to try and put me at ease, tell me to close my eyes and let go. |

I mean if you lost your eyes in an accident and you were given the choice between not having eyes at all or having to wear glasses i think people would go for the glasses. Maybe he didn't want to donate his heart because of religious stuff, i don't know.

Re: Biker, Cut in Half, but Still Alive Asks for His Organs to Be Donated
What i still canny wrap ma head around is how on earth was this man was still conscious, never mind talking, moving his arms AND rolling over! I know shock and adrenaline can be reasons for no feeling pain and being hyper alert after bad accidents, but his intestines were on the floor and he was bleeding like crazy! Sure the helmet prevented severe head trauma so no brain death, also his chest was probably unharmed so his heart was still functional, so aye he was "alive".. but he was cut in half! Like bruh wtf i'd have sure as shit hoped the human body would pass itself out in this situation!! |
