It's brutal that if he had somehow been able to lay there on his back after the first chop they probably would've cleaned him off quickly but the discomfort of being unable to breathe was too much and caused him to suffer that much more.

Just something about his face or his demeanor or maybe just the look in his eyes seems like uncertainty to me. Like he thought maybe they would let him live after he lost his ears. He just didn't seem very resigned or totally hopeless, but that's probably just how it seemed to me.
