Maybe he counted to three before throwing it? It's a misconception to hold on to the grenade and release the trigger mechanism (after pulling the pin) before throwing.

I don't know what kind of hand grenades you have thrown in your life, but most common is that the grenade primes itself when the thrower's grip onto the grip lever is released. How do you throw it by hand if you don't hold on to it? |
