Its actually pretty common. Its called a "de-gloving" injury. Your running your hand down something, It gets snagged and pulls the skin etc. off the bone.
It happens a lot on Navy ships when people wear wedding rings and slide down ladders.

It would depend on the mechanism of trauma though.
