Strange Growth Excised from My Mother's Dog

Hello everyone,

I would like to get an opinion on a growth my mother excised from her 7 year old Lab.

Apparently this grape sized growth was protruding from the dorsal side of the dog's neck. How long it has been growing under there is unknown but my mother said the bump grew obvious within a couple weeks. I had only seen it once and asked that she bring him to the vet.

A week later I visit my mom and after speaking to her a bit, she seemed worried about the bump. She excised it and was disturbed by the contents inside. Her mistake had been done and I did not pursue it further.

This surprised me because she brings her dog for regular checkups and also had a fat lump removed a year ago. So why she decided to do surgery herself is baffling.

She said it looked like brains, kidney bean shaped objects tightly packed together and countless spherically shaped egg like filling. Almost like cooked fish roe. At the top, a round ball of flesh.

So I went to the trash and took a look at it myself. Here are a few pictures. Does this look remotely familiar to anyone?

She saw a surgery once and thought "yeah I can so do that"? Poor doggie.

To me that looks like a lipoma but then again I'm not a medical professional of any kind.

Well, if a lipoma is a fatty tumor, count me in for a vote!

Re: Strange Growth Excised from My Mother's Dog

Thanks for the replies guys. I too wish my mother had not decided to play surgeon.

Do Lipoma's usually look like that on the inside? It's like a small brain or bunch of light-coloured kidney beans.
