Scalp Wound Myiasis: Maggot Infestation in an Ulcerated Lesion

Scalp wound myiasis is an infestation of an open scalp lesion by fly larvae, commonly called maggots. Flies may lay eggs in or near existing wounds, and some species can invade living tissue. Open wounds, poor hygiene, advanced age and vascular disorders are among the recognized risk factors.

Myiasis can cause tissue destruction, deeper invasion and secondary infection. Treatment can include removing the larvae, rinsing and caring for the wound, and using antibiotics or surgery when needed. Myiasis is also a recognized complication in cancer patients with malignant skin wounds, although it can occur in other types of neglected or ulcerated wounds.

I guess so.. the maggots only eat dead meat so perhaps it was her saving or something. But shit... sushi seems to me like alternative suicide.

Re: Scalp Wound Myiasis: Maggot Infestation in an Ulcerated Lesion

You can get worms from bad sushi, but they're not maggots. Her eyes look like she's Asian. There was something a week or so ago (here?) about a surgeon removing a single worm from a patient's brain stem. They'd thought from the imaging that it was a tumor.

I don't think an infection from an ingrown hair would penetrate the skull.

Re: Scalp Wound Myiasis: Maggot Infestation in an Ulcerated Lesion

There's absolutely no way this woman could have gotten a maggot/work infection by eatting sushi....
The brain is protected by a blood brain barrier. It's a barrier that prevents virtually all large and charged molecules/organisms from passing from the blood to the brain.
There's no way in hell a maggot egg can pass through this barrier.

For reference: Herpes encephalitis is a pathogen that CAN SOMETIMES (IE: extreamly rarely), pass through the blood brain barrier. It is a virus, and is a great deal smaller than an egg.

The oxygen mask is still on. No usual during an autopsy.

It's Not a Tumor, It's a Brain Worm

Doctor Surprised to Find a Worm Living Inside a Woman's Brain
By LAUREN COX
ABC News Medical Unit
Nov. 24, 2008

Late last summer, Rosemary Alvarez of Phoenix thought she had a brain tumor. But on the operating table her doctor discovered something even more unsightly -- a parasitic worm eating her brain.
Yet at a key moment during the operation to remove the fingernail-sized tumor, Nakaji, instead, found a parasite living in her brain, a tapeworm called Taenia solium, to be precise.
