Ring Implant into Cornea (Keratoconus)
When your round eyes are getting piramidal its Keratoconus. So you go to hospital to get a tunnel digged on the cornea, push a ring into the tunnel and some stiches. Procedure is awake because at some point you must push with your eye for the ring to get in. I get those implants 4 years ago on both eyes, so you can ask anything about it. Lots of funny things happened like somebody forget to include a spatula on the ring package so surgeon was calling somebody on the phone in mid operation and cursing like hell. Finally there was no spatula so she use a "idontknow" thing to do it. No fixation device for the head, a folded towel on the back of the head and a "please stay still (while we dig into)" That day 2 patients get their implants swaped (ring implants are custom made) |

Re: Ring Implant into Cornea (Keratoconus)
Because deformation on the cornea defocus vision in a way glasses wont solve it. Rings reforms cornea and prevent further deformation. |

Re: Ring Implant into Cornea (Keratoconus)
Optometrist here. How are they working for you now that you are 4 years out? Everytime I have seen them, I have felt a bit conflicted as there is often lots of scar tissue and corneal swelling/edema around the intac ring. I'm not sure if they are safe long term as I have not been able to find any studies assessing 5-10 years down the road. I've been referring my keratoconus patients for collagen cross linking, and leaving the choice of intacs up to them. Usually just fit them for a scleral rigid gas permeable lens if intacs are refused. Any complications or changes in vision since the surgery? |
