Historically, self castration has been done for religious reasons. The statement by Christ that some people make themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven's sake (Mat 19:12) has been taken by some as encouraging this practice (for instance, the famous theologian/exegete Origen of the 2nd-3rd centuries who carried it out so that he wouldn't be distracted by temptations to sexual sin)
