Re: Maggots Eating a Cat's Anus

makes me wonder what happened to the cat to initiate this?
Maggots do not eat living flesh..
Makes me think some sick kid put a firecracker or something in the cat's butt... poor animal..
Almost all maggots eat only dead but the screw-worm Cochliomyia hominivorax eats live flesh.

Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screw-worm fly, or screw-worm for short, is a species of parasitic fly that is well known for the way in which its larvae (maggots) eat the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. It is present in the New World tropics. There are five species of Cochliomyia but only one species of screw-worm fly in the genus; there is also a single Old World species in a different genus (Chrysomya bezziana). Infestation of a live vertebrate animal by a maggot is technically called myiasis. While the maggots of many fly species eat dead flesh, and may occasionally infest an old and putrid wound, screw-worm maggots are unusual because they attack healthy tissue. Screw-worms are a reportable species to the state veterinarian in the United States if discovered on livestock.

New World Screwworm Outbreak

WHAT TO KNOW
- On June 3, 2026, USDA confirmed, in Texas, the first US animal case in the current outbreak of New World screwworm.
- No locally acquired human infestations have been reported in the United States.
- Since 2023, an outbreak of NWS has moved northward through Central America and Mexico, primarily infesting livestock, pets, and wildlife, but also people.
- Infestations by NWS maggots can cause painful, foul-smelling wounds in animals and people. If not treated early, they can lead to extensive tissue damage and potentially death.
