What's up with picking each maggot out one by one? Why not give her an I.V. of antibiotic, anesthetize her, turn her head, scoop out and remove the necrotic tissue and flush out the eye socket / sinus cavity / and whatever else they find in there?

She might have gotten a bullet in the head during World War II and this festered so long she didn't feel the pain. If she lived alone, no mirrors, no assistance, dementia...
