Harlequin Ichthyosis: Newborns With Thick, Cracked Skin

Harlequin ichthyosis is a very rare inherited condition in which a newborn's skin forms large, diamond-shaped plates separated by deep cracks. The rigid skin can distort the eyelids, nose, mouth and ears. It is caused by variants in the ABCA12 gene and follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. Parents are usually carriers who do not have symptoms. Its exact incidence is unknown.

The condition was historically often fatal during the newborn period, but intensive care has improved the chance of survival into childhood and early adulthood. It is a severe chronic disease, but it is not invariably fatal. Early deaths are commonly associated with sepsis or respiratory failure.

yes it's harlequins, the skin is very dry, and does not grow. They can survive, although they will have a lot of pain, plus they need to put special lotion on their skin 7 times a day for the rest of their life.
