I think he just wanted the easier and faster way out by shooting himself, suffocating can be really horrible. Well, not that I know.

Tough situation though. He's gonna get medical treatment for a long, long time to fix that mess. We all know he will try to shoot himself again when he gets home so basically they're just wasting their resources on him since that kind of condition can't be left untreated. Sad stuff.

Vance had a suicide pact with a friend, whose name I forgot, but, was successful in his attempt.

He made a few attempts, survived a car accident after this attempt, and died of a drug overdose.
