Re: Extensive Self Harm.
Her skin looks like latex One thing I will never understand is the short pleasure/gain they receive from cutting versus the weeks of painful healing ahead. I wonder what she does in life, how she is able to inflict such gruesome damage and carry on in a state of constant healing. So sad. |

Re: Extensive Self Harm.
The physical harm (or pain) distracts them from their inner suffering. They may feel so bad they feel like they could die, wish they would or feel others are better off without them. Just a few examples. Cutting may start off as an attempt at suicide and they may find with the first cuts that it suppresses the inner turmoil, for the moment. Poor coping skills are the usual explaination combined with onerwelming stress or grief. Meaning as a child no one taught them how to deal with their problems appropriately. Lack of supporting family and/or friends doesn't help. Self harm can be drinking too much, unprotected sex, driving wrecklessly and all kind of other stuff . For some it manifests as cutting. I'm sure some of you have heard of people hitting themselves or pulling their hair out. Some birds and animals will pluck themselves bald when caged, bored or under stress. I knew an autistic man who had some thing about pulling hair, was typically another resident, a targeted one. If you were able to keep him from attacking that target long enough he'd get so frustrated he would hit the wall for a while, then himself and then then whoever who was keeping him from doing so. He would also hit himself when performing tasks he found unpleasant. Self harm is not for attention. |
