Cool X-rays of Injuries/impalments & the Stories

2mm from death: A 13-year-old slipped on an icy school floor in China after a faulty heater had leaked overnight. Xiao Lin fell forward onto a hook which embedded in his eye. A school handyman sawed the hook off the wall to free the lad, leaving 5cm sticking out of his head. Surgeon Yan Shijun commented: "The hook pierced his skull but was turned to the side by the impact. Any movement would have sent it into his brain and he could have died on the spot." He added: "He has lost his right eye but he's very lucky to be alive at all."

Almost off with his head: A Chinese builder had a very lucky escape after falling onto a metal bar which pierced through his neck to the back of his skull. Wan Jianjun was working on a building site in China, falling to the ground after tripping on a platform a metre up. His colleague Wan Liliang said: "When we looked down we were scared to death as a bar was thrust through his head. We thought he must have died." But Jianjun was still alive and was freed by firefighters before being taken to hospital for surgery. Chief surgeon Jiang Zhisheng said: "Luckily, the bar didn't hurt the vital parts of the head and now he is basically out of danger."

Sword survivor: Obviously you'd take a sword with you when you go round to visit your mate... Zhang Bin, 15, was taken 400km to hospital with 5cm of a 50cm sword embedded in his head. He said later: "Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword. He stood 3-4m away from me. "I don't know how the sword could fly to me and stab into my head. I felt sharp pains and a large amount of blood streamed down." Doctors at his nearest hospital did not feel able to deal with the injury and sent him to another unit four hours away, where the sword was removed in a four hour operation. The chief surgeon commented: "Luckily the knife didn't touch the arteries in the skull and key nerves, otherwise it would have been a different story."

Jaw-dropping: Another builder who took a tumble in China, Wu Moude, 22, landed on a steel bar which penetrated 15cm into his head from beneath his chin. It took five hours of surgery to remove the bar, which saw surgeons cut open Wu's windpipe and skull.

Another Chinese building site worker was skewered with steel rods which were fired out of a machine. Doctors, firemen and friends of the worker spent 13 minutes cutting off the rods outside his body before he was taken to the local hospital then transferred on to the provincial hospital for specialist treatment. Doctors spent more than five hours removing all the rods before moving him to intensive care where he was suffering from some paralyslis.

An unwanted souvenir: A man who went to hospital with stomach pains was found to have a surgical clamp inside his belly - from an operation 37 years before. Liu Mou, from China, had gastric ulcer surgery in 1974 and had frequently suffered stomach pains in subsequent years. He comments: "I thought it was my old stomach problems and each time I took stomach medication or anti-inflammation pills to relieve the pain." With the pains getting worse Liu went back to hospital - and doctors discovered the 10cm long instrument before removing it in a two hour operation. According to doctors Liu was lucky because part of the abdominal wall had wrapped around the clamp, preventing it from moving and potentially causing serious internal injuries.

An unusual mouse trap: A Chinese man told hospital doctors he had been moving furniture around at home when he spotted a mouse. He picked up a steel bar and gave chase - but tripped and landed on the bar, which lodged in his anus. The doctors feared just pulling out the hooked bar could cause further injuries. Firefighters cut off the bar's protruding end before it was surgically removed.

Keep your eyes peeled: A Chinese teenager slipped and stabbed himself in the face with a 7cm knife while peeling an apple. Ren Hanzhi's father recalled: "He was walking to the sofa while peeling the apple. Suddenly he slipped down and his face hit onto the sharp knife. I dared not pull out the knife as my son was screaming." The nearest hospital referred the 13-year-old to a larger unit. Chief surgeon Peng Liwei, who operated to remove the knife, commented: "It's shocking. The knife, which is more than 20cm long, penetrated 7cm into his face. "The surgery was successful and the patient could recover fully in around a month."

Not so much needle in a haystack... A two-year-old boy taken to hospital in a remote Salvador town was found to have dozens of needles in his body. Doctors discovered 42 metal needles, two of them dangerously close to his heart. Police feared the needles had been used in an occult ceremony. A Brazilian man and two women were arrested.

Warning: A 16-year-old stabbed in the head in London was taken to hospital with the blade still stuck just above his eye after the attack outside a Tesco supermarket in Southwark.
