Child With Swollen Abdomen Said to Have Budd-Chiari Syndrome
Budd-Chiari syndrome is a condition in which the veins draining the liver become narrowed or blocked, usually by blood clots or fibrous tissue growth. This can cause upper-right abdominal pain, an enlarged liver, jaundice and ascites, a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Symptoms may develop suddenly or gradually, and some people develop portal hypertension or leg swelling. The condition affects males and females equally, with most cases occurring in adults aged 20 to 40. In many cases, the cause is unknown. Treatment can include anticoagulants, angioplasty and stents, shunts that divert blood flow, or liver transplantation in serious cases.
