What a sweet little boy. My heart goes out to him and others with the same condition.

Re: Boy Born Without Brain, Dies at 3

Thanks, honey, for this post. I was aware of his case when he was born and have tried to follow his progress from a purely medical point. You know how I am and how I feel towards children, but I can understand that this was anticipated. As someone else posted, it was wishful thinking on the parent's part that he was aware of what was happening in the world around him, but, realistically, he did not know. The brain stem is the animalistic part of the brain that keeps the heart pumping and the lungs breathing. I do not mean to sound callous, but this is medical fact. I do feel that the parents loved him very much and they will rejoice in the 3 years that they DID have with him.

The story found me, as they all do. Timing is everything <3

You feel the way I do about children. I think most of us on here do.

The parents definitely loved him and will treasure the time they had with Nickolas. I'm sure.

They made the most of the time they had even if the baby wasn't aware of it.

It's nice to see this instead of some psycho abusing or killing a baby for no reason!

Re: Boy Born Without Brain, Dies at 3

Seems to me the family was a bit selfish.

I agree that the family is projecting what they wish he was "thinking" on to him, but I guess it helped give them some happiness.

Two things though - why on earth did they try CPR on him?

It was pretty much a given that he would die very early in life--but they are taking up a collection for a funeral. I hope they have a little something to contribute to it because this certainly isn't an unexpected death.

Re: Boy Born Without Brain, Dies at 3

This little guy didn't have a true case of anencephaly

With Anencephaly you have an opening at the top of the head with the tissue that covers the brain exposed.

This little one did not have a brain but did have a shriveled up piece of a brain and the top of his head was closed both of which suggest this is not true anencephaly.

Don't get me wrong it's bad enough and it is amazing he did live this long because he was like a plant. He was alive but knew nothing and felt nothing.

If you want to see a true case of anencephaly look at this:

Re: Boy Born Without Brain, Dies at 3

He was laughing because they couldn't get him to ly still, so he kept rolling off the pumpkins? That doesn't sound "brain dead" to me! It sort of makes you wonder just how much of ourselves is really in our brains. If Nick could find humor in a situation without a brain, I think that in itself speaks tons!
