Re: Ballerina Foot Injuries
I did ballet on pointe about 3 hours a day when I was younger. Dancers often put wool into the box (the part that is over your toes) of the shoe to ease the pain of the wood against your toes but I had gel inserts over my toes called Ouch Pouches which helped a lot. I did go through pointe shoes quickly though as the shank (the wooden part at the back and on the sole that stiffens the shoes) would eventually be too weak to support my foot and I'd be in danger of breaking my ankles. When I first started out on pointe in the class we spent the first 30 minutes of each and every lesson walking around in a circle on pointe without stopping and the blood from my toes seeped through the satin and my shoes were ruined as they were stained. My mum went ape-shit when I got home and after that my allowance stopped. The only thing I got given periodically and for any birthday/Christmas was a pair of pointe shoes. I hated having them fitted in the dance shop as you might not fit into the previous size/brand/style you had before and after an hour trying them on I'd lose the will to live. Glad I got out of that before I crippled myself. |

Re: Ballerina Foot Injuries
My dance instructor told me she was a bit leary of putting me en pointe, because my "index" toe is longer than my big toe...she said that people who have feet like that tend to have more problems in toe shoes.

Re: Ballerina Foot Injuries
My daughter has recently gone en pointe (wants to dance like Mommy did), but fortunately she has a terrific teacher who does not believe in no pain no gain. I advised her that I would yank Caty-Bug out quick, fast and in a damn hurry if I start noticing any adverse reactions. Unfortunately, my instructors were NOT that kind.

Re: Ballerina Foot Injuries
My oldest brother was a danseur, but, not at that young age. I read recently someone was trying to ban children starting so young. He danced behind Beverly Sills and appeared in an anatomy book. He did not have those feet, but, as I said, he started later, probably in his 20s. He is dancing in Heaven now with all his idols. |
