Acid Attacks in Bangladesh
I spent a year in Bangladesh and part of my work was with burn victims. Here are a few people I worked with as well as some that were leading local advocacy groups. Acid is probably the worst injury I've ever treated. Even with thermal burns you have some tissue to work with as a base layer or anchor. With acid you don't. It melts all tissue, down to and sometimes through bone. We had one victim die and at first we all though it was because all of her airways were compromised (you don't die from the acid, you usually just suffocate or succumb to your wounds while trying to heal). To our surprise, we found she had drowned on her liquified tongue, teeth, gums, and the better part of her sinuses. Horrid way to disfigure or kill someone. When they start disfiguring these men that throw the acid it will stop. An eye for an eye.

The reasons in the attacks varies as much as the attacker. Spurned lovers get possessive, jealous or insecure fiances accuse their loved one of infidelity, fathers and relatives are protecting the honour of the family or ever covering sexual abuse/urges. End of the day it's a kind of attack that hits the psychology of the victim just as hard. Shootist - they do. You just don't hear of it as much because it is rare. |

how brave these women are, some are even smiling. how hard they fight to live. they still view life as precious with all they have been thru, makes my problems seem so small in comparison

Seeing these women almost makes me cry. I just can't understand how people can be so cruel. These women are so brave though, if this happened to me I would probably kill myself. |
