A (possibly) short life in the fast lane vs. a (probably) longer one in the slow lane. It's an individual choice. This reasoning also extends to the matter of suicide: if someone decides they had enough and its time to check out, well that's his/her decision to make, nobody else's. I used to point out this line of thought (as an option) in my philosophy classes. From a non theistic perspective, there are no effective arguments against it. Only if one presupposes that there is a personal God who created you and to whom you are responsible for maintaining your life as best as you can, is there an argument against the above line of thought. For those who reject belief in any such God, this argument is not available. I always like reading your comments. You have a sharp edge that reminds me of where I was at some years ago. I've mellowed somewhat with age (hopefully due more to my life experience than to senility!). |
