Then you're probably wrong. Based on the amount of brain tissue in the 2nd photo, it appears he stuck it to his right temple area. And as to the "most of his head would be gone" you said, that all depends on the angle he was holding the firearm at the time he pulled the trigger. I'm not saying it couldn't be a higher caliber handgun like a .357, .44, etc...but this could've definitely been a shotgun.

Maybe, damage looks like it's to the side of his head though. Kinda of hard to hold a shotgun to the side of your head and pull the trigger unless it's sawed off and if it was sawed off his head would be gone. Putting a shotgun in your mouf does something like this. · |

There's a story about 2 brother's fighting with eachother and one threatened suicide. So the opposite brother went inside and grabbed a shotgun and walked out and handed it to the other and said "then do it". And he did. There's a 911 call also linked I just need to find it.
