Mental really, how we cope with tragedy by putting the kettle on and telling a few sick observation jokes. Every awful world event, there's been hoards of jokes about. From the Twin Towers to Mumbai recently. Must be some inbuilt coping technique. I know I said a quip about the poor lad above but understand I also do feel the tragedy of it.

Reminds me when I was a kid and the Challenger had just blown up a few weeks before (on my birthday no less), and I told a school trip chaperone the old joke - Why is everybody bathing at daytona beach? Because that's where they found Christa McCauliph's head and shoulders

That didn't go over too well for some reason, and I get a feeling that it wasn't because of the groan worthy pun...
