Wow! What an excellent thread and write up!

One question though, how did divers recovery the body? Wouldn't that still be toxic in the postdigester tank?
Thanks! Divers regularly need to enter tanks like these and their suit protects them.

Thanks for the link. I trained a guy on automation software in 1991 that worked at a sewage treatment plant. They would pay him about $100 extra to put on a sealed scuba suit and jump into the treatment tank for maintenance. I think it was a larger, open tank, not like that "anaerobic digester" hole to Hades in the story.

My ex-husband was a Double B operator in Florida (water/wastewater).....he might have gotten his A after the divorce, but anyway, he’s a high school teacher now. I used to visit him at work and we would stand on the scary flimsy railings and talk while he did his samples. That shit scared the hell out of me. I remember him joking about it being anaerobic and “hold yer’ breath if ya’ go in, cause yer’ going straight down.....no floaters here”. Yeah, there’s a reason we’re divorced.

Your ex was talking about the tank being aerobic. Aerobic tanks are open and anaerobic tanks are covered. The hazard of falling in aerobic tanks is the strong current caused by the diffused air. It has the same effect as a low head dam in a river: It circulates the victim in a vertical loop. If someone falls in, and gets caught in a loop, the best way to save them is turn off the air. In most cases, I would turn off the air before bothering to throw them a float. Even if they grab a float, in many cases the current pulling the victim down will pull the float down as well.

Ah yes there is a video on YouTube channel “horror stories” that shows a video of this happening to someone in a water channel where there’s a wall. They didn’t make it.
