That is actually pretty late. The decision is drastic but not life changing in that she becomes what she already knows she is. You can be sure that she knew by 14 she was girl trapped in a boy's body.

They probably weren’t allowed. But hormone treatments are ridiculously easy to get in Brazil through illegal means but they cost, and apparently a lot of trans women sometimes have to turn to prostitution or dealing drugs to afford to purchase those treatments which doctors won’t prescribe (or would prescribe for more). I’ve seen it mentioned more than once in documentaries. A recent one I saw a trans woman in Brazil said she’d rarely ever met another trans woman there who hadn’t turned tricks or dealt drugs just to get the hormones through back street doctors, etc. It’s very sad - especially that for a lot of people to become who they feel they truly are inside, have to resort to dangerous lifestyles in order to obtain it. It’s a case for some of doing absolutely anything and sacrificing all safety for their goal. |

Sex and gender are two different things. Sex can't really be changed. Gender can be though and when someone refers to another as man or woman they refer to their gender, which in trans people is different from the one assigned at birth. This is where the scientific community stands.
