Allow me to make a general observation: For a number of generations now (stretching back to the fin de siècle, at minimum, though the seeds, I think, were planted in the 17th and 18th centuries with the cultural response to Descartes' rationalism and Hume's empiricist rebuttal) Western societies have become ever-more accepting of a very diverse list of once ostracized or marginalized groups. Every time, the unaccepting have ended up being labeled "on the wrong side of history" and subsequently vilified in cultural memory by a later generation. As always, the next generation can be very distinct from the last. People in Alabama loved Bull Connor is 1967, now he only evokes shame and humiliation. In a broader example, dueling died in a single generation as young people mocked would be duelists as uncouth morons. It's just something to think about. |
