Would you say the same if he had invested his money with a platonic friend or family member? If he was in a relationship with her (given we don't know how long they were together or what their relationship was like), why would he even suspect that she was going to screw him over?

They're both to blame, he should have gone through the proper channels to secure his money but she should not have scammed him out of thousands. His only crime was, like you said, being a gullible dumbarse.
