The Shocker's Mix 12

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Postmortem facial injuries inflicted by rodents.

This individual received the injuries postmortem by rodents, cause of death unknown. No further info on the case. Apart from death scene routine and autopsy procedure, the investigation of cases of postmortem animal interference needs specific attention. While the identification of antemortem injury versus postmortem artifact generally presents no difficulties and a characteristic parallel series of furrows created by the animals incisors is indicative of rodent gnawing to bones, the determination of rodent species by the morphological appearance of damage to skin and soft tissue can be unconvincing. At first sight these injuries may be even misinterpreted as the result of a sharp-bladed instrument. However, the presence of fecal material of rodent origin at the scene, or rodent hair found in the nearby vicinity of the body, can give hints towards animal activity.

Fig2.2 Concrete culvert.

This 55 year old male was fatally crushed by a concrete culvert. He suffered from compound skull fractures, brain lacerations, and C1- C2 fracture separation severing spinal cord. Severe rib fractures with flail chest and heart/aorta lacerations. Torn pericardial sac, hemopericardium, bilateral hemothoraces and torn diaphragm.

A concrete culvert is a tunnel structure constructed under roadways or railways. These reinforced or non-reinforced concrete structures incorporate a drainage system that funnels water or electrical from one side to another.

New York - Stab wounds into the victim’s back made with a large bladed knife. No further info about this case.

Stabbing wounds are piercing wounds, which may extend through the tissue and bone into the vital organs. They are caused by relatively sharp-pointed instruments such as knives, screwdrivers, ice picks, daggers, scissors, or pieces of glass. Stab wounds vary according to the type of weapon employed and how it was used in the attack, (thrust, pulled out, twisted, etc.). The principle involving lines of cleavage (Langer’s lines) is also applicable to stab wounds.

The stabbing wounds can appear open and gaping or tight and narrow depending on whether the wound runs parallel to the lines of cleavage or against them. The shape of the stab wound might indicate what type of weapon or blade was used. However, like a bullet wound, the stab wound will be smaller than the blade that caused it due to the elasticity of the skin. The type of wound is, therefore, determined by estimates of the minimum and maximum size. Sometimes the knife hilt may bruise the skin and leave an identifiable mark.

Fig4.1 Woman's throat slashed by her assailant during a sexual assault and murder.

Grand Prairie, Texas - The victim’s throat was slashed by her assailant during a sexual assault and murder. Her larynx was severed preventing her from screaming for help. No further info about this case.

Slash wounds occur as a result of tangential movements of sharp implements across the skin surface, for example, razors, broken glass, knives, swords, etc. They are often deeper at their origin and tend to be more superficial at their termination. They are often aimed at the head or neck with fewer injuries aimed at the upper limb and trunk.

Fig5.1 Suicidal stab wound.

Nassau County, New York - Suicidal stab wound into a female victim’s chest with the knife left in one of the wounds. Many times the medical examiner will be able to state that a wound is consistent with a particular weapon. In this case the weapon used by the victim was still in the victim.

A stab wound is a specific form of penetrating trauma to the skin that results from a knife or a similar pointed object. While stab wounds are typically known to be caused by knives, they can also occur from a variety of implements, including broken bottles and ice picks. Most stabbings occur because of intentional violence or through self-infliction. The treatment is dependent on many different variables such as the anatomical location and the severity of the injury. Even though stab wounds are inflicted at a much greater rate than gunshot wounds, they account for less than 10% of all penetrating trauma deaths.

Fig7.2 Gases exit the barrel before the projectile. As a result, the gas collides with bone tissue & causes expansion of the subcutaneous space with tearing & laceration of the skin.

This individual has a contact-range gunshot wound on the forehead. No further info. In contact gunshot wounds with bony tissue underlying the injury, the injuries are typically called a stellate wound, where the gases exit the barrel before the projectile. As a result, the gas collides with the bone tissue, resulting in the reflection of the gases. This gas causes the expansion of subcutaneous space and pressure, which results in an explosive injury, tearing, and lacerating the skin and subcutaneous tissue, resulting in the stellate wound. Additionally, the expanding gases also cause a back-splatter of soft-tissue and blood onto the firearm and fingers.

#2. I assume the culvert lured him closer with a Twinkie, and then pounced on him once he was within range?

Re: The Shocker's Mix 12

I suppose it could have been worse for the culvert guy. He could have looked rather like that anyway, like British politician George Robertson.

Your work continues to amaze, and yes, sometimes shock. It also saves me time and energy by not having to do these "experiments" on the locals.

If you could somehow re-create #1 in the way of make-up, you'd win the Halloween costume contest every time.
