Pope Francis died at age 88 at Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City at 7:35 a.m. on April 21, 2025. The Vatican said he suffered a stroke followed by irreversible cardiac arrest.

His body received thanatopraxis, a temporary preservation treatment intended to maintain a natural appearance during several days of public display. The procedure included arterial injection of preservative fluid, disinfection, corrective makeup and arrangement of the face and hands. It did not include the cavity treatment associated with classical embalming.

Francis was transferred to St Peter's Basilica on April 23 and lay in state in an open, plain wooden coffin through April 25. About 250,000 mourners attended the public viewing. His revised 2024 papal funeral rite replaced the traditional raised catafalque and triple casket with a single wooden coffin lined with zinc.

The coffin was closed on the evening of April 25. His funeral was held in St Peter's Square on April 26, followed by burial at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. He was the first pope buried outside Vatican City since Leo XIII in 1903.
