Re: Patrik Budenz “Search For Evidence” Series

When I took a forensic paper my lecturer was scathing about shows like CSI. He said in the first lecture that this class ain't CSI. Thanks to shows like CSI the juries now expect an expensive DNA test for EVERY case, they expect the DNA tests to be instant, not the drawn-out 6-month process that they actually are. They expect the experts to ALWAYS have a conclusive test result, they expect the experts to ALWAYS be confident about their findings, and they expect a match for EVERY test!!! CSI also glamourised the whole forensic discipline, no, you don't get to wear your everyday clothes in a crime scene, you have to wear a hot, stuffy body suit! You don't get to pick up evidence with your hands and put it in your pocket, you have to catalogue every piece of evidence! You don't solve a murder by just peering over the body and voila you get a cause of death! And certainly most suspects don't confess in 10 minutes!

And lastly, not every person in the forensic discipline is 6ft tall, 25 years old with multiple PhDs, toned, tanned, with legs that go forever and hair that's never out of place, and a killer wardrobe! Most of us just look like normal people, with bits hanging out, body parts we wish were bigger/smaller, we have ugly/bad hair days and sweat rash from wearing that overall all day. Even if you were a stunning model no one would ever know under that disposable coverall you wear anyway!
