Pashupati Cremation Pyres, Nepal
There is an area known as Pashupatinath, along the Bagmati River, where the holiest Hindu temple in the valley is located. Families have traditionally taken their dead to the river to be cremated and then buried in the forest near the temple, which is owned by the Pashupati Area Development Trust. The burial ground in the forest has been used for years by not only Dasnami Hindus but also minority sects of Hinduism (such as the Kirat ethnic group, whose members bury rather than cremate their dead), Muslims, Baha'i, and Christians, all minority religions in Nepal. There are no other officially recognized sites for burials in the Kathmandu Valley for these religious groups. The Trust decided that having graves of non-Hindus on their sacred ground was offensive to Hindu sentiment, and began denying permission for burials. A Kirat and Christian were turned away from the grounds when families arrived to conduct their burial service. The bodies were not allowed to be interred. The second image with the unburnt legs is unreal! There are quite a few limbs protruding in picture one also. |
