My Lai Massacre: US Troops Kill 347 to 504 Vietnamese Civilians, March 16, 1968
On March 16, 1968, during the morning, unarmed South Vietnamese men, women, children and infants were killed in the hamlets of Son My village, Quang Ngai Province, by troops from Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, Americal Division. Known as the My Lai Massacre, the killings produced no definitive toll. The US Army counted 347 deaths in My Lai 4 alone, while the Vietnamese memorial at Son My records 504 names, ranging in age from one to 82, and also includes those killed at My Khe that same morning. Helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson Jr. and his crew placed their aircraft between advancing troops and civilians trying to escape, rescuing more than a dozen people. The massacre remained undisclosed until Seymour Hersh exposed it in November 1969. Color images taken by Army photographer Ronald Haeberle subsequently appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer and LIFE. Roughly two dozen men were charged, but Lt. William Calley alone was found guilty. Convicted of 22 murders and given a life sentence, he spent about three and a half years in custody, chiefly under house arrest. My Lai photos in wide circulation are often captioned inaccurately, and survivors appear in some famous frames. |

this was not our finest moment, it discraces the troops who are trying to make the world a little more deacent.
