Murder of Nicholas West, Killed in a 1993 Texas Hate Crime (Autopsy Photos)
On the evening of November 30, 1993, Nicholas West, a 23-year-old gay man from Tyler, Texas, was taken at gunpoint from Bergfeld Park by three men who had intended to rob and assault a gay man. They drove him about ten miles to a clay pit outside town, where they robbed and beat him, made him remove his clothes, and shot him repeatedly. His body was discovered two days later. Donald Aldrich, 29, and Henry Dunn, 19, were given death sentences and executed in 2004 and 2003 respectively, while David McMillan, 17, was sentenced to life in prison. The killing became a landmark case in the Texas hate crime law debate, preceding passage of the James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act in 2001. It was the subject of the 1997 documentary Lone Star Hate, which included forensic photographs.  ·  ·  · |

Indeed. And you are just as dead whether they call it a "hate crime" or not. I don't know what good it does to invent labels like that - murder is murder.

Probably just a "feel good" measure by lawmakers unless they can impose higher penalties for "hate" crimes.

So was it just some random murder? Had nothing to do with the suspect hating or disliking his lifestyle? I can almost guarantee it wasn't because he caught him sleeping with his wife |

Hate crime, in my understanding, is when you commit a crime against somebody because of their lifestyle or skin colour, or beliefs.
